Things

As I came home today I thought of small things that make me smile. Things that I'm not sure if they make other people smile, or if other people ignore them.
Turning on the lights in my apartment when i get home makes me happy.
And little kids pretending to be adults, like wearing suits, or sunglasses does to.
And seeing people dressed a certain way, like carrying flippers and a kick board, so you can tell where they are going even though you don't know them, that makes me smile, but secretly because mostly people are very serious.
I collect all these instances, every time I see one and keep them in my head, and when i think about them when I need to, or sometimes just now and again.

I started thinking about my collections of instances because I saw a pregnant lady with her little girl at their letter box. the little girl was pulling letters out of the letter box one by one one by one and handing them to the lady. and the girl was so excited with ever letter that she pulled out.
I still get excited about checking the letter box. I hardly ever get mail and when I do it is mostly bad news. But I just really like opening it up and seeing letters.

Today when i got home and checked the letter box, there was a postcard from new york in there.
From my friends to me.

room with a view

The Lady Across From Us

i was once one of two little kids looking out a window.
We peered out, nervous and on tiptoe, jostling each-other to see through the gap.
My clumsy little fingers making an opening in the venetian blinds so that we could see without being seen.
I was the girl. Julian was the boy. We were the same height and had almost the same haircut.
We were in my room which was painted pale green because thats the colour i liked at the time and we were looking at the lady that lived across the street.
She was a witch. She hated kids. She had a cupboard full of rotting meat, where she made the children she had kidnaped sleep.

She was old, and wore a tracksuit which was all one shade of bone.
She couldn't see us because we were spying, and we were good at it.

The lady was outside her house, on the nature strip, pulling up weeds with a knife. She was kneeling down.
She used her witchy powers and she saw us.
She looked up slowly, and then she stood, straining to see.
She looked right at us and we froze.
And then she lifted the knife up, out in front of her throat, and silently drew it across from left to right.

I jumped back from the window and dropped the blind.
We ran and hid under the bed.

That Van

When we went to the window we saw that there were two people in that little van.
The man was fixing the refrigerator, bent down and almost disappearing into the guts of the machine. The other was a woman. I only saw her hands. They made me think she was old, because they were wrinkled and spotted and had pearl nail polish on the sharp nails, and they looked old. Without thinking i assumed they had lived in the icecream van forever and would continue living there forever.

Apparently the refrigerator has been out for 2 days.

Apparently the man was trying trying fix it instead of getting someone in to do it.

Apparently he was getting in her way when she was trying to serve costomers and it was really very frustrating.

Scott bought me a warm jam doghnut.
I ate it while we walked away, it tasted like old oil and I was happy we didn't have to stay at that van window for too long.

This is what i see when i look at you.

a lady lost her lucky coin today. Everybody tried to help her find it but we couldn't. One boy saw it under the ticket machine. He got right down low and put his cheek on the car park floor and said
I think I can see it.

he still had a coffee in one hand so i said i would try and get it with the arm of my sunglasses. the lady said
you don't have to
but i could see she was pretty attached to that coin so i tried.
For a second I got worried that I just pushed it in more. But then she got right down low, and put her cheek to the car park floor and said
no, that's not it.

then she got a bit embarrassed and said
it doesn't matter.

the other boy, the taller one, said to her
here have this coin, it can be your new lucky coin, its not the one but it is small and gold.

for a second she didn't say anything just looked at the coin. Then at the boys face. She took the coin and turned it over in the palm of her hand then she said
oh oh thank you, its similar you know, its nearly the same.

i went for a run today on the beach. That is a lie. I went for a walk today on the beach, I went for a run on the promenade. On the becach there was lots of sea junk that had washed up because the wind has been really strong latley. Scott said it is becuase the wind was 'on shore'. I'm not too sure what that means but I think that all wind is on shore, otherwise there is no wind and its just not windy. Tangled up in the sea weed there were a whole bunch of blue-bottles and there was a pufferfish the size of my foot with glazed over eyes. It looked like it died trying to see how long it could hold its breath under water. we also saw two other fish. Scott pointed them out because they had no eyes. They just had eye holes.

I am beginning to regret the name of this thing. The prospect of putting up all the things i know is daunting. Also, some of the things i know are not really worth sharing.

Here is a list of things i know that are not really worth sharing:
- If the lamp on  my desk gets too close to the bookshelf it starts to smell like burning bookshelf.
- The front-door key is gold. The security-door key is also gold.
- Onion should go see-through, when it does add the other ingredients.
- Cellophane melts when you put it in your mouth.

thats just some of them, obviously.

I find lots of hair on the floor at my house. But not all of it is my hair, some of it is other peoples. You can tell if you pick up the hair and let it hang. If it is straight and short and blonde, it is mine. If it is long and wavy and brown, it is Jasmines and if it is long and blonde it is Mels. If it isn't any of those things then it belongs to someone else and someone else has been in our flat, and some of their hair has fallen out.
